PRACTICAL GUIDES / SOLAR & STORAGE
Home battery storage without solar panels
A home battery can be assessed without rooftop solar. The opportunity is to move electricity use between tariff periods, so the whole tariff and your daily routine need to stack up.

What a standalone battery does.
A suitable system can buy electricity from the grid when the rate is lower, store it and supply some of your demand later. It does not generate electricity. Because charging and discharging lose energy, you buy more than the battery eventually delivers.

Work out the value of a delivered unit.
A useful first check is: avoided import rate minus charging rate divided by round-trip efficiency. Keep the units consistent and use the electricity rates from the actual tariff.
For illustration only, charging at 10p/kWh with 90% efficiency costs about 11.1p for each kWh delivered. If that replaces electricity at 25p/kWh, the gross difference is about 13.9p per delivered kWh. These are arithmetic examples, not current tariff offers or an estimate for your home.
That difference is before equipment, installation, standby consumption, maintenance and degradation. It only applies to energy that would otherwise have been bought at the higher rate.
Compare the whole electricity bill.
A low overnight rate can come with a different daytime rate or standing charge. Compare the household’s total annual bill under each tariff, including the power that the battery cannot cover. Do not apply the cheap-rate saving to electricity you already use overnight.
Eligibility, charging windows and tariff terms can change. Check the supplier’s current conditions, including whether the tariff needs a particular vehicle, charger or metering arrangement.
Size around realistic charging and use.
Usable capacity limits how much energy can be held. Charge and discharge power limit how quickly it moves. A short cheap-rate window, low daytime consumption or a substantial backup reserve can leave less value than an annual-consumption calculation suggests.
Ask for a comparison with no battery under the same tariff as well as any proposed tariff change. This separates the benefit of the battery from savings caused by switching supplier or changing when appliances run.
Can solar be added later?
Explain future plans before choosing equipment. A standalone battery and a later solar system need compatible electrical and control arrangements. Do not assume every battery can be expanded or connected to every inverter.
Our solar calculator models storage charged from solar only. For a standalone battery assessment, send us your electricity use and tariff details so the charging schedule can be considered properly.
