PRACTICAL GUIDES / SOLAR & STORAGE
Can I add a battery to existing solar panels?
Many existing solar systems can be assessed for battery storage. Start with the inverter, wiring, metering and export arrangements before deciding which route makes sense.

Collect the details of your existing system.
- Panel and inverter make, model and approximate installation date.
- Any handover documents, warranties and electrical diagrams.
- Annual generation and, if available, import and export data.
- Your current electricity and export agreements.
- The intended battery location and what you want storage to achieve.
If you do not have every document, start with the information you can safely access. You do not need to open equipment or climb onto the roof.
Understand the connection options.
An AC-coupled battery uses its own inverter on the property’s AC side and can be an option for an existing solar installation. A DC-coupled arrangement connects storage through a compatible hybrid system. The right approach depends on the actual equipment, electrical design and installation work.
Do not assume that an inverter described as battery-ready accepts every battery. Compatibility, firmware, controls, supported capacity and manufacturer conditions all need checking against the chosen combination.
Protect existing arrangements.
Tell the installer about any Feed-in Tariff or export contract before equipment or metering is altered. Confirm how the proposed work affects metering, documentation, payments and the agreement with the relevant supplier. Avoid relying on a general promise that all arrangements remain unchanged.
Measure the extra benefit of the battery.
Your solar panels already reduce some grid purchases and may earn export income. A retrofit calculation should compare the existing solar system with the same system plus storage. Counting all existing solar savings as a new battery benefit exaggerates the return.
If a battery stores electricity that would have been exported, its benefit must allow for that lost export income and the energy lost in storage. For example, storing 1 kWh and returning 0.9 kWh does not avoid a full 1 kWh of grid imports.
The solar calculator shows an additional battery benefit separately. Use a site-specific assessment and your actual data before deciding on equipment.
Plan the location and handover.
Battery installation needs a suitable location and an assessment of access, electrical work and manufacturer requirements. Discuss monitoring, reserve settings, controls and what happens if communications fail. If backup is required, ask for it to be included explicitly in the design.
